The current owners lovingly built this comfortable home in their spare time! In between making Stone Rollers, Ki Ki Engineering owners Mary and Laurens Verhees built Pelican Perch Retreat for their retirement and now for anyone who would like to stay in the Coorong.
Working and living in their family’s Ki Ki business next to the busy Dukes Highway, Mary and Laurens built their dream home as they could afford it. At the same time, they were romanticising retiring peacefully on the shores of Lake Albert in beautiful Meningie, South Australia.
With plans to create a unique space for their aging father, Mary and Laurens had grand plans for Meningie and Dad, who unfortunately passed as the final brick was laid. Shortly after, Mary and Laurens decided to convert their” Grandfather flat” into a beautiful, on-the-water accommodation for couples.

Mary and Laurens have thought of everything for the perfect couples get away. Located at the end of picturesque Warrengie Drive, the accommodation is at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, making it a tranquil and restful spot.
The Pelican Perch Retreat comes with a queen-size bed, fold-out sofa bed, kitchenette, bathroom, and separate entrance with the private key. The flat is serviced by reverse cycle air conditioning and is accessed via bitumen roads. Outside, there are several places for entertaining.
The front veranda provides the perfect spot to admire the stunning waterfront with a glass of wine or a BBQ. The property also includes ample space for secure, off-street parking for boats and vehicles.
The home is a short drive, or a comfortable walk, from the Meningie town centre and amenities. This home allows guests to enjoy water activities like kayaking and fishing and long leisurely walks along the water’s edge.
Guests have access to two kayaks and can also loan golf carts to explore the beautiful Lake Albert Golf Club and play 9 or 18 holes during their stay. Pelican Perch Retreat is also a 10-minute drive from Noonameena, the headquarters of the Coorong National Park, and is just 30 minutes to The Bend SA Motorsport Park.

Coorong Camping
If you like a more outdoor style holiday, there are plenty of other places to stay in the Coorong region, including camping on the Coorong. The Coorong is a spectacular location to camp in and is well known for its wildlife, its scenery and rugged beauty. The Coorong is 490km2 and 194km long, so there are plenty to explore and places to camp. The beach is just a quick boat trip across the Coorong and over the dunes.
Birdlife International also recognises the Coorong as an Important Bird Area. Some birds are Pelicans, Chestnut Teal, red-necked Avocet, and Fairy Terns. It is such an exciting feeling witnessing these birds in their native homes.
The Coorong is also home to common fishes such as the Coorong Mullet and Red Fins. Coorong Mullet is a must-eat fish to achieve the ultimate Coorong experience and has such a unique flavour. The Coorong offers multiple activities around the town and out the Coorong. Including kayaking, hiking, fishing, bush walking and family BBQs. Camping and four-wheel driving are the most popular.
Across the Coorong, there is a range of walking trails, including the Pelican Path. Pelican Path is a Ngarrindjeri phrase for 'Together We Walk'. The path captures a 400m interpretive path along the waterfront, highlighting the Aboriginal and environmental history of the Meningie town.
Stuck on what to do? The Pelican Perch is close to various areas, such as the local Meningie Football and Netball grounds. They host many home games in the winter, providing an excellent town atmosphere.
