A lifetime love of the Murray

A lifetime love of the Murray

Deb Cox and her husband Roger loved the river so much, they upped stumps and moved from Adelaide. Now, three generations are enjoying the river lifestyle, and their retirement plans are on hold.

Deb, who cleans and prepares Coorong Realty holiday houses for guests, fell in love with the Murray River when she and Roger were teenagers.

‘We have always lived in Adelaide, but have been coming up to the river for holidays since we were seventeen.  We used to come up and ski with our friends on weekends, and fell in love with the whole region.’

The couple planned to retire when they moved, but four years later, with a growing forklift business, and unable to sit still, they have no plans to slow down. ‘Retiring to the river was our dream.  Well, we got to the river, we just haven’t pulled off the retirement part yet.’

We’re not sure retirement will happen any time soon.  Deb has boundless energy, and thoroughly enjoys her job.

‘I get real satisfaction from my job, and I get to see all sorts of house styles and décor, which is a real buzz.  And I meet so many people – I love the interesting, and often random, conversations I have with visitors and locals.  People have such great stories around here.’

So what does Deb do when she’s not making sure guests have everything they could possibly need?  You’ll find her playing with her two fur babies, mini dachshunds Zaci and Zoey.

‘I’m a dog lover, I’ve had them my entire life.  Zaci and Zoey are twelve months old, and I get so much enjoyment from them.’

‘Roger and I have six grandchildren between us, all aged under six, who live in Adelaide, so we love it when they come to visit.’

Deb and Roger love watching them playing on the river, just like the generations before them.  ‘We moved here because of the water lifestyle.  It’s always so relaxing for the adults, and the total opposite for the kids, so everyone is happy!’
