Meningie – Open for Business

Proud local identities, Jo Schulz and Tony Turner, have invested in the Meningie region and are here for the long haul. Both, originally & separately, farmers, Jo & Tony found their way into the tourism business almost by accident. Jo explained that about 15 years ago, Tony had recently sold his farm and was moving into a range of commercial investments when the former Meningie Cheese Factory became available.

It was a bit like Faulty Towers to start with….

Says Jo, “I was also moving into a new phase, after the loss of my husband and transition from the farm, when I heard about the Cheese Factory opportunity from Tony”.
And, with the Cheese Factory situated on the shores of Lake Albert, right next to the very popular caravan park ‘I just couldn’t resist‘ says Jo.
Initially the pair were to be silent partners in the business, but soon found themselves running the restaurant.
“It was a bit like Fawlty Towers to begin with” grins Jo, but soon the business built into a successful restaurant offering a full a la carte dining for lunch and dinner, promoting local wine & produce, along with conference & function facilities.
In 2013, Jo & Tony leased the premises to current owner, Sandeep Tati who has introduced his own changes, including his infamous curry nights.
Looking back Jo & Tony are proud of what they established.
“We think that Meningie has so much to offer to visitors. The proximity to the Lower Lakes, Coorong and River Murray makes this area a truly unique place to visit, year round”
And, with the arrival of The Bend Motorsport Park at Tailem Bend, Jo & Tony are predicting good things for Meningie.
“Meningie is less than 30 minutes from the track and there is a range of really special, on water accommodation”
And, when Coorong Tours gets going, Meningie is really going to able to showcase just how special this area is”
“Imagine! A Snail farm, an undercover dairy herd, the church from the $50 note and some of the best Beef & Sheep production in the country are only a few short minutes from Meningie” exclaims Jo.
