3 Farmers and a Baby - The Freshies Story
Well, not quite, but 3 rural women didn’t have the same ring to it!
When Sharon, daughter Jackie and her partner TJ decided to buy the Old Cheese Factory restaurant in Meningie 2 years ago, the timing wasn't quite right.
They continued with life in their respective careers. Sharon at Vandenbrink Transport for 12 years and farming part-time. Jackie was also farming for over 10 years. And TJ, who was pregnant, was pouring beers at the Meningie pub, and yep, farming part-time.
Fast forward to 2021 when the Cheese Factory Restaurant came back on the market. An emergency meeting was held and the team decided to go for it and Freshies was born.
Freshies had it's grand opening over Easter and over 250 meals were sold on their first day! Talk about hitting the ground running! The following days were just as big and emergency calls were made for more supplies.
To make things even more interesting for the new business owners, little Tek was born only a few weeks later. Running a business along with a newborn makes for interesting times, but they have taken it all in their stride and Tek is often at work keeping everyone company.
The girls have a ‘keep it fresh’ motto with their menu and are sourcing most of their produce locally. If it’s not local; it’s within the state and I personally love that.
Sister Wonita is keeping up supply of her hugely popular sweet treats which go perfectly with a freshly brewed Mahalia coffee.
The star of the menu is the fresh mullet supplied daily from local fishermen, Gibbs and Sons.
Lakeside Quality Butcher provides their top quality meats from the bacon to the steaks; you must try the ‘Freshies Burger’.
It’s ‘Snitty’ night every Wednesday and Sundays is the day for Pizzas from 12 to 8pm. The whole menu is always available and there are gluten free, vegan and dairy free options.
So, what’s a good pizza without a good wine? A varied selection of wines are available, all sourced within South Australia, mainly from Langhorne Creek. If you are more of a beer/cider type, all the beers on tap are brewed in the Adelaide Hills.
With plenty of space inside and out, this venue is great all year round from meals to private functions. Since opening Freshies have already hosted and taken bookings for weddings, engagements, birthday parties, corporate meetings, a school formal and external catering for events.
Into the future there will be live music and cocktail nights. With oodles of space to get your groove on, this will be the place to be. I really loved the local community vibe of Freshies.
